篇一:成熟的意义 The Meaning of Maturity


    Being a mature student does not mean being an old-timer. Mature is not measured by the number of years a person has lived. Instead, they yardstick of maturity is marked by the qualities of self-denial, determination, and dependability.
   做一个成熟的学生并不意味着成为一个老前辈。成熟不是用一个人生活的年限来衡量的。相反,成熟的标准应该用自我否定,决心和可靠性等品质来衡量。
    Self-denial is an important quality of a mature student. The word “Self-denial” means restraining being strict with oneself. Sometimes, people define it as self-discipline which has a bias passive meaning. Self-denial is not making a lot of rules and regulations to layer upon layer to manacle oneself, but with the autonomic action to create an order for our study life. We always have great dreams, have magnificent ideals and have grand prospects; however, they are often postponed or even vanished by ourselves due to the lack of self-denial. We should put our ideas into practice. Besides, self-denial also means denying yourself and controlling your impulses. Nobody is perfect. Faced with mistakes, we should take measures to modify it and never behave impulsively.
    自我否定是一个成熟学生的一项重要品质。“自我否定”一词意味着严于律己。有时候,人们把它定义为自律,有点偏见的消极意义。自我否定不是制定大量的层层规章制度来束缚自己,而是用自主行动给我们的学习生活形成秩序。我们总是怀有伟大的梦想,宏伟的理想和盛大的前景;然而,他们常常由于缺乏自我否定而被自己耽误甚至是消失。我们应该把我们的想法付诸实践。此外,自我否定也意味着否定自己和控制你的冲动。人无完人。面对错误,我们应该采取措施进行改正,不要冲动。
   Determination is another characteristic of a mature student .What we define determination is to take up your mind to act decidedly and take the consequences. Determination not only means decision but also practice. In China, there is a famous fable “the foolish old man removed the mountains”, which presents spirits of firm determination and perseverance. No good is ever done by hesitation in the world. It is known that Buffet, every time  his investment will get a huge return, because he is well prepared in advance and determined what makes his pay shall be multiplied.
   决心是成熟学生的另一个特点。我们把决心定义为下定决心行动并承担后果。决心不仅仅是指决定,也指行动。中国有个著名的寓言故事“愚公移山”,展现了一种坚定的决心和毅力的精神。世界上没有犹豫可以做成事的。据了解,巴菲特的每次投资都可以获得大回报,因为他实现做好了准备,知道什么能够使他付出的得到翻倍。
   Although self-denial and determination are both vital, probably the most important measure of maturity is dependability. When we talk about a person who is dependable means he is worthy of reliance or trusts. If you are committed to transmit some secret documents to a company, you must be required dependable. Sometimes dependability refers to responsibility. Judging a person whether he is mature or not, responsibility is the key factor, because only the person with responsibility is worthy of being depended on.
   尽管自我否定和决心都很重要,成熟最重要的标准是可靠性。当我们说一个人可靠的时候我们指的是他值得依靠或信任。如果你从事传送一些公司机密文件的工作,你必须可靠。有时候,可靠性就是责任。判断一个人是否成熟,责任是关键因素,因为只有一个有责任心的人才值得依靠。
   In conclusion, if a student who owns the qualities of self-denial, determination and dependability, he can say that he is a mature student with pride; otherwise he can’t. If you really can develop the three qualities, you really comprehend the meaning of maturity.
   总是,如果一个学生拥有自我否定,决心和可靠性,他可以自豪地说自己是一个成熟的学生,否则就不可以。如果你真正能够发展以上三种品质,你就真正理解了成熟的意义。

  Most of us have found, some with difficulty, that our sexual feelings contribute beautifully and significantly to our lives if we treat them with respect and if we keep them in reasonable control. We hurt ourselves and others when we treat these feelings scornfully or express them without consideration of others. Briefly, if we treat our own sexual feelings with both respect and control, our lives will be reasonably satisfactory with respect to love and sex. Furthermore, we can more easily teach our children sexual expression with responsibility.

   "Children over 15 should be allowed to make decisions about their lives without the interference of their parents or teachers. Society should accept that children mature at a younger age and should adjust the law accordingly."
   The fact that we are not able to determine the exact moment at which maturity is realized due to the gradual changing nature of the growing process does not prevent us from establishing a practicable criterion by using the concept of a legal age, and placing on it an excessive amount of reliance as if it were a creed.Objectively, since the interpretation of maturity merely bears a local, temporary meaning (e. g. , it is understood distinctly in different cultures), not to mention the diversity of particular individuals, clearly an age criterion is definable only in the sense of statistics, yielding an average result of which the legislation should be adjusted to. However, no evidence indicates the invariance of the statistical result under the vicissitudes of the times.
    Persisting in an a priori assumption may not be as highly laudable and dependable as believing in an empirical conclusion.While, both facts and analyses, verifying uniformly the time-dependency of the statistical mature age, suggests the shift to a younger age of children's maturity.
   In reality, phenomena serving as foundations of the above statement are enormous, such as the manifest superiority of the young in knowledge structure and quantity to their elder generation for a corresponding age, their highly developed intelligence and advanced ability in comprehension and their sophisticated behavior in schools and their communities. Neither could all related evidence be listed, nor should it be ignored. Even with a phcnomenological attitude, one is bound to perceive the indispensability of a change to the old rule to meet the requirement of the new situation.
